Student-Led Fundraiser for Asheville Animal Shelter

Paws for Pingree, led by Callie Brady '26 and in collaboration with Eliza Payne '27, launched a fundraiser this November to support the Brother Wolf Animal Shelter in Asheville, North Carolina. After Hurricane Helene destroyed the shelter, all proceeds from the Vault, Pingree’s thrift store, will go toward rebuilding efforts.

The shelter's physical assets were lost in the extreme flooding, but all animals were safely evacuated. “Brother Wolf is currently seeking monetary donations to help rebuild their shelter, as they have had a profound impact on Asheville,” said Eliza, who initiated the drive after recognizing the need for assistance following recent hurricanes.

In addition to the fundraiser, Paws for Pingree is organizing a community activity to further raise funds. An informational meeting on Friday will educate attendees about the hurricane's impact on animal shelters. “We aim to raise awareness about the implications of natural disasters on animal welfare and the vital role of community support,” Eliza explained.

Eliza’s passion for helping shelters stems from her initial outreach to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts, where she gathered insights on shelters in need. Picking which shelter to raise funds for ws not easy. "It was a very difficult decision, as there are so many shelters that were completely destroyed.” she said.

As the initiative kicks off, Paws for Pingree hopes to inspire empathy and community action. “We want our peers to understand that their contributions can significantly change the lives of animals in need,” Eliza stated.

For those interested in supporting the cause, the fundraiser runs throughout November at the Vault, with more details about community activities to follow. Community members are encouraged to participate and document their involvement in the efforts to support Brother Wolf.
