Spotlight on Student Activism

Spotlight on Student Activism

From April 19–23, 2021, Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) students and faculty advisors did a remarkable job expanding programming, amplifying the voices of LGBTQ+ community members, educating the community, and providing activities that invited us all to contribute to creating a safe and inclusive school community. On Wednesday morning, we hosted our powerful keynote speaker for LGBTQ+ Visibility Week, Schuyler Bailar, the first openly transgender NCAA division 1 swimmer. On Friday, we culminated the week in solidarity with other students across the country in the GLSEN Day of Silence, which we broke together on the fields at the end of the day.

Friday, April 23, also found our students celebrating the nation's 51st annual Earth Day. From April 26–30, Student members of the Green Team set up a week full of activities, action items, and resources on the climate crisis. Petitions on ending single-use bottles, presentations on the Green New Deal, resources on reducing food waste, and wrapping up the e-waste drive from last month were all student-led.

Congratulations to all of our student-activist leaders for two great weeks of community engagement!
