The American Chemical Society's Division of Chemical Education has named Pingree Chemistry teacher, Irv Levy, as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Service Award.
The honor recognizes Levy's extensive commitment and leadership to the Division, including his tenure as Chair and his role in orchestrating approximately 20 national meetings.
Levy's record-setting term as CHED Program Chair saw him handle as many as 1,500 abstracts and 40 symposia at each national meeting.
Known for his humor and fairness, he notably advanced cross-divisional programming, emphasizing sustainability and collaboration. He has edited ACS Symposium Series books, generously returning the royalties to the Division.
Levy's service to the Division is not just administrative; he has also served as the program co-chair for the Division's Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, which will take place this summer at the University of Kentucky.
Levy has expressed deep appreciation for the award, saying, "I love the division and the time I have spent working with my colleagues, so this is a very meaningful award for me."
His prior recognitions include being named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and an American Chemical Society Fellow, testament to his renowned contributions to chemistry. Levy's Outstanding Service Award will be formally bestowed at the ACS national meeting in Denver this August.
