We See You at the Apex

APEX courses are signature academic experiences that challenge students to apply what they’ve learned in bold, interdisciplinary ways. These advanced-level classes encourage students to think creatively and critically, pursue original ideas, and engage deeply with real-world questions. Through self-directed, research-based projects, students synthesize skills from across their coursework to explore topics that matter to them—and to the world. Collaboration, peer feedback, and reflection are central to the process, as is Pingree’s commitment to community. APEX projects often focus on social justice and civic impact, bridging scholarship and citizenship in meaningful, mission-driven ways.

“ Last year as part of the APEX American Cultural Studies class, we were tasked with researching an ongoing issue in our hometowns. With the guidance of the teachers, I went to a town meeting, interviewed local professionals, and spoke with members of my town government. Afterward, I gave a comprehensive presentation back to the class and even decided to become involved in one of my town's climate committees. Many of my peers also became involved in their towns—organizing 5Ks, creating fundraisers, or joining local committees.”Alex M.Current Student

What, no APs?

That’s right—and we’re proud of it. At Pingree, we believe the most meaningful preparation for college and life goes beyond memorization and test-taking. Our APEX program offers advanced-level courses designed by our own faculty to foster deep learning, creativity, and real-world problem-solving. Students pursue topics they care about, collaborate with peers, and engage in research that matters—all while building impressive transcripts that colleges recognize and respect. By moving beyond APs, we’ve created space for greater student choice, academic freedom, and community-minded learning—without sacrificing challenge or college readiness.

Rigorous, Purposeful Learning

APEX courses challenge students to go beyond foundational knowledge, asking them to synthesize skills and think critically as they design and execute original, high-level research projects.
