Dr. Johnson and his family celebrate following the Girls Varsity Field Hockey team's NEPSAC Class C championship victory

About Dr. Johnson

Tim Johnson has been Pingree’s head of school since 2009. Under his collaborative and student-centered leadership, Pingree continues to flourish. Achievements during his tenure include building a new arts wing and athletics center, completing a turf and track project for athletics, tripling Pingree's endowment, increasing faculty salaries and expanding benefits, strengthening enrollment, supporting innovative and signature academic programs, rewriting the mission, and building community.

With Dr. Johnson at the helm, Pingree remains committed to its identity as a small day school that encourages critical thinking, discipline of mind, and civic engagement.

Prior to joining Pingree, Dr. Johnson held multiple roles at Philadelphia’s Springside School, including chair of the arts department, assistant head of school, associate head of school, and head of upper school. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, Virginia.

He has served as a trustee and volunteer for a number of boards and professional organizations, including the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE), Tower School, Montserrat College of Art, St. Andrew’s School in Rhode Island, and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

Dr. Johnson graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College with degrees in studio art and art history. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001 and a Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006.

In addition to being a devoted athlete, Dr. Johnson is an accomplished artist who has participated in juried exhibitions in Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.

He lives in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, with his wife, Jen Groeber, and their four children.
