Seniors Emily Scott and Sarah Martin will share their senior projects, an a cappella concert and a display of photos of Haiti, in the Mary Wield Pingree Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, May 30. The public is invited to attend.

Sarah's art show will be hung in the entrance to the theater, featuring photography from her recent trips to Haiti after the earthquake in 2011 and 2013. "I want to show people a side of Haiti that goes beyond the statistics and stories that we all hear in the news," says Sarah. "There is so much more to this beautiful country, and I want people to be able to understand the human experiences and connections that go beyond the views of the media." Sarah's show will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. She will also be selling bracelets from a company called 3 Cords, which employs amputees from the earthquake who are struggling to find work.

The cappella concert is organized by Emily to benefit the Tracey School Elementary music program, a public school in Lynn. Performances will feature Pingree School Spectrum Highlights, Manchester-Essex High School SoundWaves, and Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School Dell Belles. The concert will highlight the role of the artist in our local and global community through various multi-media approaches. The concert begins at 7:30; doors open at 7:00. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. All proceeds will go to the Tracey School music program.

Jason Ries, Pingree's Technical Theater Director, was part of the design team that won an Eliot Norton Award on May 13 for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity. The Eliot Norton Awards are Boston's equivalent of New York's Tony Awards. Specifically, the team won for outstanding design for a production in a midsize, small or fringe theater. The design team included set and props by Jason; lighting by Jen Rock; sound by Arshan Gallus; costumes by Kendra Bell; video by Olivia Sebesky. The show also won Norton Awards for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Actor.

"It was quite an experience to be part of a production that was not only greater than the sum, but more like an exponential multiplication of so many outstanding parts," says Jason.

Hockey Rink Gets First Line for Safety

Pingree’s H. Alden Johnson Jr. Rink is the first in the nation to have the newly conceived “Look Up Line” painted on its surface. The “Look Up Line” a 40-inch area painted safety orange around the boards in the hockey rink, is designed to remind young players to lift their heads and brace for the boards. For older, more mature players, the line can be a way to signal a harsher penalty for illegal plays.

Look Up Line founders Pingree alumnus Thomas E. Smith ’08, Timothy A. Roberts, Buffalo Sabres ’87, and Stefan L. Brannare, Pittsburgh Penguins ’97 are “convinced the line can help induce a Pavlovian response to slow down and lessen the impact of dangerous plays immediately, whether you are a National Hockey League professional or learning to skate.”

The line is painted safety orange so it will not interfere with other lines on the ice and because the color is universally associated with caution. The founders believe that, while studies are undertaking research into reducing and treating head and spinal injuries, prevention is a more effective approach. They believe the Look Up Line will prevent injuries.

Thomas Smith knows about spinal cord injuries firsthand. He founded the Thomas E Smith Fight to Cure Paralysis Foundation after suffering two spinal cord injuries, one in 2008 and one in 2009, both while playing ice hockey. A standout player in high school with a goal toward playing in college, Tom’s plans were dashed by these injuries, but he has found new meaning in his life with a devotion to finding cures, and now finding preventions, for spinal cord injuries.
Alumna Wins for Big Ten Champs

Veronica Corning '10 has been making quite a name for herself on the tennis scene at Big 10 Northwestern University. In April, Veronica was one of three Northwestern tennis players to represent her school on the All-Big Ten women's tennis teams when she was selected for the second team. As the Wildcats website said, “Corning earned her first All-Big Ten distinction after going 11-9 in dual meet action while splitting time between the top two spots in the Wildcats' singles lineup. She notched a 5-6 record against conference opponents and handed then-No. 23 Whitney Kay of top-ranked North Carolina her first loss of the dual meet season. Corning has been ranked as high as No. 96 in the nation this season, including currently No. 123. In doubles play, she has teamed with freshman Alicia Barnett to win their last eight matches. The duo posted a 7-1 record against Big Ten foes.”

The website went on to note that "Corning was also recognized as the team's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen to receive the honor are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athlets must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting."

Later in April, the third-seeded Wildcats defeated Michigan 4-1 to give Northwestern a Big Ten title for the 15th consecutive season. Corning played a role in this accomplishment. According the website, “The red-hot pairing of Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning finished things off for the Wildcats as they earned their 11th-straight win by jumping ahead early en route to an 8-5 victory over Mimi Nguyen and Sarah Lee that gave the 'Cats the doubles point.”
