Technical Theater deals with all of the behind the curtain facets that happen in support of the performing arts. These areas include: scenery, lighting, sound, projection, props, and more. Pingree has several ways of incorporating technical theater into our program including classroom, activities, and after school productions.
THEATRICAL DESIGN and PRODUCTION
Students will work both independently and as part of a team to creatively explore the backstage elements that make up a theatrical production. Class work will emphasize the theoretical and practical skills and techniques needed to design and implement scenery construction, hanging and focusing lighting instruments, implementing a sound system for effects and reinforcement, and scenic artistry.
SOUND and LIGHTS (Half credit)
Sound and Lights will introduce to the student, to a practical approach to the lighting and sound aspects of theatre. Students will hang and focus lighting instruments, learn how to set up and run the theater and portable sound systems as well as how to implement a sound system for effects and reinforcement. Students will also have a chance to use these skills in support of Pingree’s events.
STAGECRAFT and CONSTRUCTION (Half credit)
Stagecraft introduces students, to a practical approach of the backstage aspects of theatre. Students learn how to safely use the tools in the shop to create scenery and props for Pingree’s productions in a project-based hands-on learning environment. They are also exposed to the procedures and production guidelines that ensure a successful show.
Students may also participate in the Sound and Lighting Engineering Division (S.L.E.D.). This organization is dedicated to providing technical support for all of the functions and events that Pingree school has during the year. S.L.E.D. members are trained to operate both the theater's permanent sound, lighting and projection systems, as well as, portable systems. In addition to learning these skills, they can earn Community Service hours for their work on school events.
Students may elect to do Technical Theater as an after-school activity as the construction and performance crew for the school's major productions including the Fall Drama, and Winter Musical. We encourage teamwork and provided an opportunity to learn new and exciting skills as they collaborate to create a piece of live art.
