Our College Counseling Benefits

"Out of all the applications I read last year, the four best and most memorable essays I read were from Pingree applicants." ~ A Visiting College Representative

  • It is Pingree’s philosophy that college counseling begins the minute a student walks into Pingree freshman year. Teachers and advisors are immediately guiding the students’ educational and extracurricular choices towards their intellectual and personal growth and their next steps beyond Pingree.

  • The college counseling staff meets with tenth grade parents in the spring to introduce them to the college process. Our three counselors explain the importance of course selection for junior year and that each student will have a counselor to work with individually during the junior and senior years.

  • Since Pingree college counselors work with no more than 35 students at a time, the relationship between each counselor and student is very personal and close. The counselor gets to know the student well and the student and parents trust the counselor to guide them through the process wisely, taking into account the particular skills, interests, and needs of each family and child.

  • College applications have become more complex in recent years. Should a student apply Early Action? Early Decision? Early Decision II? How does this impact one’s chances of acceptance? How does this affect financial aid decisions? Navigating this terrain requires not only experience, but also time, wisdom, and sensitivity. Pingree’s Office of College Counseling offers this to students every day. Their doors are open for scheduled one-on-one meetings, impromptu check-ins, college prep classes, and parent meetings every day.

  • Our counselors have extensive experience in college counseling and admissions work and have earned the respect of their peers and colleagues. They are frequently asked to speak at conferences nationwide. Co-Director Meghan Farley, for the second consecutive year, has been named to the College Counseling Advisory Board of the Princeton Review, an honor bestowed on only 25 college counselors from public and independent secondary schools in the country.

  • Our counselors work closely with students and families to help them apply for financial aid, scholarships, and grants. As the costs of higher education continue to rise, we believe it is essential that families have support in negotiating the complexities of financing college.

  • Our counselors not only know their advisees well; they also know colleges and universities throughout the country well. They visit schools around the country, attend professional development conferences, and host more than 100 college representatives on our campus each year. They have cultivated strong relationships with colleges and universities throughout the nation and in several other countries. Consequently, these institutions know who Pingree students are, what kind of education and character they bring with them to college, and how they will contribute to their new academic and social communities.

  • As a result, our college counselors are able to guide Pingree students towards the best fit for each one of them. Over the past several years over three quarters of Pingree students have been accepted by their first or second choice schools.
