Spring Season Update
from Alan McCoy, Director of Athletics:
We have now put the spring season into the record book and
it was a memorable one. Three of our
teams won EIL titles; four went to post-season play, with one winning a New England championship.
Our athletes were accorded All League and All American honors and every
team improved over the course of the season. Over 78 percent of our students participated
in interscholastic sports this spring, with most sports having at least two and
sometimes three levels of play.
New this year was our fledgling track team. We trained on campus and at the Gordon
college track, and we were able to enter three meets. We did quite well
considering this was a new experience for Pingree athletes. We had 17 students participate who are
already looking forward to next year.
Our tennis program was successful and well subscribed. The boys
varsity team finished second in the EIL and made it all the way to the NEPSAC
Class C finals, after winning in both the quarterfinal and semifinal
rounds. In the finals, they lost
narrowly to a strong Rivers team.
The girls tennis team
won the EIL and were undefeated in the league for the third year in a row. The
team finished a close second in the New England Tournament. The core group of this exceptional team is
made up of seniors; their talents will be missed. The JV and instructional
levels of boys and girls tennis all had rewarding and fun seasons. Players in
those programs will be contributing significantly to our varsities next
spring.
Baseball had another terrific season, going undefeated in
the EIL and capping off the season with a victory in the New England
Championship, defeating Hamden Hall in the final game at Salem State College.
The team plays a highly competitive schedule and more than holds its own against some of the
best teams in New England.

Girls lacrosse repeated as EIL champs, going undefeated in
the league for the fifth year in a row.
While there is no
New England
tournament for girls lacrosse, our girls were ranked among the top tier of teams
in prep school lacrosse and senior Cat Dioli was given All American Honorable
Mention for the 2010 season.
Boys lacrosse finished second in the EIL and went all the
way to the finals of the New England tournament
but came up a close second on the day.
The team plays a highly competitive schedule and won many hard fought
games along the way, including an exciting come-from-behind win over rival
Pomfret late in the season.. The JVs
also had an exciting season, starting a bit slow but finishing strong with key wins
late in the campaign.
Softball had large numbers with both a varsity squad and
over 20 girls on the JV. The JV squad, while challenged in the win category,
improved greatly and had fun in the process.
The varsity was competitive and was the only team to have beaten EIL
champion Dana Hall. The Highlanders
prevailed in a 13-inning game. The future looks good as we only graduate a few
players from this year’s team.
Ultimate Frisbee had big numbers again and fielded both an A
and B level. We lost many strong players from the previous year’s team, so the season
was a bit of a challenge and wins were hard to come by. It all came together late in the season with
an exciting victory over Masconomet, coming from 10 points down to earn the win.
Our sailors had a terrific season. This is a program that often does not get
noticed as they practice and compete off campus. They trained on Chebacco
Lake and sailed in Boston each week. The season went well and
ended up with Pingree winning the Mass Bay League Class C Championship,
finishing first in a field of 14 schools.
Kristin Altreuter and Brianna Truesdale were named the top crew in the
division.
We wish to acknowledge the contributions of all our student
athletes, particularly our most recently graduated class. Your enthusiasm, your hard work, your
commitment to team as well as your skill and competitiveness have made for a
memorable season. Best wishes to our graduates and we look forward to the fall!

Winning in the 13th inning of the EIL Tournament Semi-Finals with
two big, come from behind moments in the 9 and the 13 inning. We got contributions from a number of
different players, which added up to a total team win. This win seemed to
propel us through the NE playoffs ending in a New England Championship.

Coach’s
Memorable Moment:
There is much pride in wearing the
Pingree Girls' Lacrosse uniform, as it is a symbol of hard work, passion and
camaraderie. We are also a program
steeped in tradition that has been established throughout the years. However, one of the most rewarding aspects of
coaching this team is watching the players interact with each other and build a
strong bond across grades. We give the
upperclasswomen permission to help teach, and I enjoy observing a younger
player approaching a senior and asking them a question about how to execute a
part of a play or how that senior ripped a sidearm without being checked. These interactions tighten the bonds amongst
players, and we find that this group truly loves each other and will leave
their heart and soul on that field for each other.

Coach’s
Memorable Moment:
A very memorable day for the
Pingree Boys Varsity Tennis team was when we hosted Dexter Academy. They were a strong team with a lot of USTA
tournament experience and had defeated a team that had given us our only League
loss of the season. Ours was a fine team effort because we were able to compete
well across the lineup and contest each point in every match. As the match went on, the results from one
individual match, or doubles team, seemed to spur on the rest of the team
playing on adjacent courts. Sam
Bachelder at No. 1 singles was playing a highly-ranked junior player, and while
he did not win his match, Sam was able to push the kid to the point where he
was talking to himself, complaining loudly, and generally doing everything
possible to make every Pingree player within earshot think that he was losing
and play harder and bear down on their opponent just like Sam was doing. Most affected was Tim Knowles, two courts
over who played the best match of his season and utterly overpowered a younger,
but very talented player. A breakthrough
moment was when Tim was up 5-1 in the second set, having won the first, but when
he dropped three games in a row, and seemed to be on the verge of a dramatic
loss of confidence he pulled himself together and served out the match with
conviction. Then, after picking up a key
doubles point from the undefeated Tim Knowles/Josh Linton team, Sam Cregg, on
the next court over, bounced back from a tough tiebreaker loss in the first set
to dramatically change his tactics from long baseline rallies to aggressive
"chip and charge" net play. In
the end, Sam's three-set victory clinched our best win of the season, and helped
pave our way into the New England tournament
as the number two seeds.

Coach’s Memorable Moment:
The softball team's memorable moment would have to be the
12 inning victory over Dana Hall, the eventual EIL League champion. Despite holding
a 4-2 lead for most of the game, due to some superb pitching by Kellie Marshall
and defense from Jaime Cappucci and Kara Kovacev, we allowed Dana to go ahead
7-4 in the top of the sixth inning; yet, then tied the game ourselves in the
bottom frame. Six innings later, thanks to five shut out innings of relief
pitching from Shelby Difiore, a line drive by Molly Grant brought home Grace
Steward for the victory.

JV Softball had many memorable moments this 2010 Spring
season, but the one major achievement that really stands out was when we got
our first double play! The ball was hit to first and our first baseman stepped
on the bag for the first out and then tagged out the runner who had been
heading to second. It was a fantastic moment and it showed that our team was
really grasping important concepts in Softball. Great season ladies!

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, JV Baseball was riddled with
injuries. Eight men show up for a bus trip to Weston to take on the Rivers School.
Our ninth man didn't show up until the second inning which at that point we
were losing 8-0. With mercy rule floating in the air, JV Baseball didn't give
up, scoring 3 in the fourth, 3 in the fifth and 5 in the sixth to win the game
11-9.
