Team Overview

Pingree touts a football program that develops the individual both physically and mentally. The Highlanders were NEPSAC Bowl Champions in 2009 and 2010 and were NEPSAC runners up in 2011 and 2015. We continue to emphasize conditioning and basic skills. As sophisticated as the game of football has become, blocking and tackling are still the essence of a successful team. With a strong foundation in place, the team has developed and continues to perfect our no-huddle spread offense. On defense, we are using a 4-3 defense with emphasis on group tackling and disciplined positional play. Above all, we continue to stress the importance of team play both on and off the field, which fits the philosophy honored by all of Pingree’s athletics programs.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Chris Powers

Coach Powers is the founding head coach of the Pingree football program which started in 2005. He has brought together a great staff who continue to foster a great environment for our program. Coach Powers has compiled an impressive record, including four NEPSAC Bowl appearances; winning two New England Championships (2009, 2010). Discipline, Accountability, Pride!

Assistant Coaches:

Paul Swaim - Defensive Coordinator

Paul joined the Pingree staff in 2009. Before that he coached at Endicott College for three years and prior to that was the Head Coach at Georgetown Middle/High School from 2003-2005. He won a league title at Georgetown in 2005 and while at Endicott, the Gulls finished in the top 10 Division 3 New England rankings. Paul has been coaching football since 1985. He is a graduate of Peabody High School and Boston University and his favorite team, other than Pingree, is the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Rob Van Tuyl - Special Teams/Offensive Line

Robert has been with the Highlanders football team since its inception in 2005. Currently Robert works with the offensive and defensive line and is the special teams coordinator. Prior to coaching football at Pingree Robert coached as an assistant coach in Miami, FL. Roberts is the head of the science department and coaches the varsity alpine ski team.

Mike Wilmot - Defensive Backs/Receivers

Mike Wilmot joined the Pingree athletics staff in 2010 and has worked with both the football and baseball programs. He has been impressed with both the level of play and the quality sportsmanship of the Pingree athletics program specifically, as well as the EIL and Evergreen League in general. Before joining the Highlanders, Coach Wilmot worked as the head coach of JV baseball and defensive coordinator of the JV football squad at Cushing Academy. In his previous athletic career, Coach Wilmot enjoyed playing baseball, football, and rugby.

Andy Williamson - Defensive Line/Offensive Line

Andy joined the Pingree athletics staff in 2012 and graduated from Endicott College in 2010. While at Endicott, he played for the same Gulls football team that featured current Pingree coach Paul Swaim on its coaching staff. Before Endicott, Andy completed a post graduate year at Bridgton Academy after playing at Brunswick High School in Brunswick, ME from 2001-2004.

Ken Adinkra - Running Backs/Linebackers

Ken played running back at Pingree before continuing on to Amherst, where he earned NESCAC All-Academic and All-Conference Team honors. Ken is alumni relations officer in the Pingree Advancement Office.
